About The Event

Come join us in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, for a community-centered resort-and-culture week, March 12 - 18, 2024. It is said that Yogyakarta is the capital of Indonesian culture. It is home to the world's largest Buddhist temple and one of Indonesia's most significant Hindu temples. For many Indonesian people, it’s a place they will make a pilgrimage to once in their life, and you’ll be amazed at the many friendly Indonesian tourists and activities for them. It can also be a bit of a hectic city at times, so for this trip we will base ourselves at a paradise within Yogyakarta, the Hyatt Regency Resort.

This event is a little different than our typical structure. On top of our usual week of awesome activities, families will be taking advantage of the Hyatt Regency Resort facilities while we explore Yogyakarta together. Your family may either stay at the Hyatt or purchase day passes to utilize the facilities during the pop-up week! More info in the Lodging Section below.

The Worldschool Pop-Up Hub provides super casual opportunities to gather, connect with other worldschoolers, learn about the local area, instill new friendships, share your insights, and immerse in a friendly, accepting mobile community. Our activities highlight local nature, history, food, and culture... but you'll also have plenty of time to relax, get to know each other, and even stray from the itinerary to add activities that cater to the group's interests.

Pop in for a few days or the full week. Join as many activities as you'd like. It's up to you!

Our itinerary will include activities such as the following:

*Borobudor Temple, dating from the 9th century this site is renowned as the largest Buddhist temple in the world

*Prambanam Temple, an expansive 9th-century Hindu temple complex featuring structures with stone spires & sculptures

*Central Museum of the Air Force Dirgantara Mandala

*Java History and Culture Museum

*Kranggan Traditional Market for local food and traditional goods

*Marliboro Street wandering and shopping

*Hazmah Batik Shop

*Shokudou Japan Night Food Market

MEET YOUR HOST:

Hi, I'm Bevin. We have been wandering the world since the kids were babies, and Alexander (13) and Cassia (10) love traveling as much as their mama. We learn as we wander and are always interested in unique & authentic cultural experiences. We have traveled to more than 75 countries since the kids were born, and we are always excited about finding new places we love, as well as returning to favorites.

I'll be honest here -- we aren't so into roughing it, and we all enjoy a fun swimming pool and delicious breakfast buffet! We went to Yogyakarta in winter of 2023 and absolutely loved this hotel and surrounding area. The kids have been begging to go back ever since, so we thought -- why not bring along friends?!?

STRUCTURE for the WEEK:

Each day we will plan a half-day outing, departing the resort at about 9:30-10:00am. We'll return to the resort around 2:00-3:00pm each day to allow plenty of time to enjoy the facilities during the steamy afternoons. Some daily outings may be shorter, the visit to Borobudor Temple will be longer.

LODGING & NEIGHBORHOODS:

The majority of the activities will be held in Northern Yogyakarta. The host family will be staying at the Hyatt Regency Resort which will be a centralized location for our activities.

The Hyatt Regency Resort property is spectacular with landscaped gardens, pavilions, terraced goldfish ponds, and the most fabulous pools! The series of pools has a large temple in the center with a big (adult-friendly!) waterslide. There is a jungle pool under the trees, complete with a Tarzan swing off the “cliff”, and there is an activity area with a balance battle station and water basketball. You’ll also find some resident guinea pigs to feed, Indonesian games, and older children can rent electric scooters to explore the grounds. You can see a complete list of resort activities here.

Our family went to the hotel in February of 2023 and absolutely loved every minute. It is one of the places my kids have asked to return. If you have been to Bali, you’ll find Yogyakarta completely different. It’s still that gorgeous green of Bali, but a lot more authentic, and lot less (foreign) touristed. It's a fantastic value!

As world travelers who frequent resorts, we think this is one of the most wonderful and best value resorts we have been to around the world. The breakfast is out of this world! With endless local dishes, make your own noodle soup buffet station, all the sweet things, fresh juices and fruits, and wonderful salads. It’s a dream, and you won’t want to miss it.

Good to know: There are rooms at this hotel that come with Club Lounge Access, which includes breakfast and also an evening two-hour service with unlimited alcoholic beverages and “snacks”, which we find are enough for a light dinner for our family. It’s a relaxed but somewhat formal environment, you’ll want to wear something a little nicer than pool clothes and flip-flops.

Hyatt Regency Resort Rooms: The rooms in the hotel are clean, air-conditioned, have a private bathroom, and have 2 twins or 1 king bed, plus a simple chair and desk. The hotel can arrange for an additional rollaway bed for a charge and can accommodate families in adjoining rooms as well.

Room Configuration and Number of People Accommodated:

  • Base Room =  2 adults (ages 12+) plus 1 child under the age of 12 -- OR  -- 1 adult with 2 children (under 12)
  • Base Room + Rollaway Bed = 3 adults (ages 12+) -- OR -- 2 adults (ages 12+) with 2 children (under 12)
  • Either room can add the breakfast and happy hour food service by selecting the "Club Lounge Access" option
  • Note: The hotel is firm on ages, all guests 12 years and older are considered adults. If you have a 4-person family and all members are 12 and older, you will need two rooms. Adjoining rooms are available.
  • If we have enough interested participants, and our group requires 10+ rooms, we will do what we can to receive group rates.
  • Hyatt Points: This is one of the best deals around for those with Hyatt Points! One week at the Resort equates to a single night of regular Hyatt accommodation.

Restaurants: There are many restaurants nearby, and eating out is extremely inexpensive (especially outside of the resort). We enjoyed a few vegan Javanese cafes when we were there, which were wonderful, and about US$2 or so per person.

We recommend staying at the resort if possible or an area in the north of the city. For those staying off-site, a day pass is available for the days your family wishes to join in the resort activities. At time of publication, passes cost ~US$7/day for a child (ages 0 -11), and ~US$14/day for adults (ages 12+).

All questions you have about the resort can be directed to Bevin, you'll find her in the Facebook group listed below.
