MEET YOUR HOSTS:
Host #1: Charlotte is a solo travelling mum with 2 teen girls, aged 14 and 17.
We've been worldschooling since sept 2022 and over this time have done a mix of travel in Europe in our RV, as well as international travel including attending a number of hubs and pop ups along the way. We have a pretty laid-back attitude with travel... sometimes we have a robust plan and other times we don't. We love to be spontaneous from time to time which has given us lots of unexpected adventures and allowed us to meet and make friends across the globe. It’s these connections that we love most about our worldschooling lifestyle, there is absolutely nothing better that meeting up with people we've met in different locations across the world again and again... which is why we love the pop-up hubs so much as they offer such a great opportunity to do this.
Host #2 is Sharla, traveling with her husband and 2 teen boys, aged 14 and 18.
Sharla and the rest of the Crabtree Family have been traveling together as a family part- or full-time since 2015. Our family of 4, with 2 teens (14 and 18) has travelled together around the US, all over Europe, Morocco, Central America, Thailand, and are super excited to explore more of Southeast Asia this coming year. Our first pop-up was in London in 2022 and we loved it so much, we’ve since been to one in Madison, Wisconsin and another in Kuala Lumpur. We are planning on Penang and Siem Reap, as well! We will be spending a month in Da Nang prior to the pop-up with other worldschool families, getting to know the area and planning a great itinerary.
LODGING & NEIGHBORHOODS:
Da Nang has many great areas and neighborhoods to explore, from My Khe Beach right on the city's beautiful coastline to the bustling Da Nang City Center and Dragon Bridge. The city is divided in half by the Han River, offering a cityside and beachside. The host families are staying between My Khe Beach and the Han River in the An Thuong area.
The Da Nang City Centre, along the Han River waterfront, is great if you want to be close to everything and enjoy the local life. This area is centrally located and offers easy access to many of the city's attractions and eateries.
If you prefer to stay closer to the beach, My Khe Beach is located at the city's northern end and offers stunning views of the sea and the Son Tra peninsula. This area also has plenty of restaurants, cafes, and shops.
The An Thuong area offers a great position between the beach and the city centre. An Thuong's streets are lined with an array of eateries, boutique stores, and local markets.
If you would like to stay a little further outside the hustle and bustle of the city, Son Tra Peninsula, often called the "Green Oasis" of Da Nang, boasts lush greenery, meandering roads, panoramic views of the South China Sea, and secluded beaches. Car rides into the city will take ~20 minutes.
Luckily, no matter where you choose to stay in Da Nang city, nothing is far away. At most, it’ll be a 15-minute drive from one corner of the city to the other. The airport is only a 10-min drive from the city center.
TRANSPORT CONSIDERATIONS:
Da Nang has an efficient public bus system with routes that are clearly labelled in English at each stop and fares that are very cheap. (VND 7,000-15,000 per ride) Other handy transport options include:
- Metered taxis – Best way to get from point A to B. Ensure drivers use the meter to avoid arguing over fares.
- Motorbike taxis – Popular for shorter trips where buses don’t go. Negotiate the fare before setting off.
- Bicycle & motorbike rental – Ideal for exploring beaches and neighbourhoods at your own pace. Rent from hotels or agencies along main streets.
- Grab car & Grab bike – Southeast Asia’s top ride-hailing app offers everything from cars to motorbikes. Download the app and input your destination for door-to-door convenience.
