MEET YOUR HOST(s):
We are the Coles – a tight-knit trio consisting of parents who crave adventure and an 11-year-old named Sebastian, who loves video games and waterfall hiking. Since 2019, we've been living life to the fullest as full-time worldschoolers, without a home base. We've loved delving into the culture (and food!) of Latin America as well as SE Asia. Myanmar, Malaysia, Mexico, El Salvador, and Ecuador have been some of our favorite countries so far!
Currently, we're driving the Pan American Highway from the US to Ushuaia, Argentina. It's been the road trip of a lifetime, filled with unexpected encounters, breathtaking vistas, and some pretty outlandish stories. And guess what? Our next destination is none other than Buenos Aires, the vibrant capital of Argentina. Buenos Aires is our final South American stop before we ship our car back to Mexico.
We're so excited to immerse ourselves in the pulsating energy of this cosmopolitan city. It'll be our first time exploring Buenos Aires, and we can't wait to connect with other worldschooling families who share our passion for adventure and education.
LODGING & NEIGHBORHOODS:
Buenos Aires offers a variety of options that cater to different interests and preferences. Many of our activities will be in Recoleta and Palermo. San Telmo and Microcenter will also have activities. Before booking a place, be sure to check Google Maps to see how close the nearest subway stop is, you won't want to walk 15 blocks to the metro.
If trendy restaurants, vibrant nightlife, excellent shopping, and beautiful parks are your main draw, Palermo is the top pick. For museums and a more upscale cultural experience, Recoleta is the place to be. If you prefer a central location, Microcentro (City Center) puts you right in the heart of the action, although it can be a bit noisy. And for a Bohemian and artistic experience, San Telmo is an excellent choice. In addition, any of the areas immediately adjacent to these four neighborhoods are also solid choices. The host family intends to stay in one of these neighborhoods.
For safety reasons: avoid La Boca at night as well as the Retiro train station and its surrounding less-developed area.
TRANSPORT INFO:
Buenos Aires is a pedestrian-friendly city, especially in neighborhoods like Palermo and Recoleta. Exploring on foot allows you to soak up the local atmosphere and discover hidden gems along the way. Just be mindful of your surroundings and use caution when crossing busy streets. Buenos Aires also boasts a relatively easy transportation system, making it convenient for travelers to navigate the city.
The city offers an extensive network of buses, subways, and trains, providing affordable and efficient options for getting around. The Subte (subway) is a popular choice for traveling longer distances within the city, with six lines covering various neighborhoods. Buses, known as colectivos, are widely available and can take you to almost any destination in the city. Be sure to have some coins or a Subte card, which is a reloadable transportation card, for payment.
Taxis are abundant in Buenos Aires, and hailing one is usually not a problem. Look for official taxis with a light on the roof and ask the driver to turn on the meter. Alternatively, ride-sharing services like Uber and Cabify are also available and provide a convenient and safe way to travel around the city.
If you enjoy cycling, Buenos Aires has a bike-sharing program called Ecobici. You can rent a bike from one of the many stations throughout the city and explore at your own pace. Additionally, some neighborhoods have bike lanes, making cycling a pleasant and eco-friendly way to get around.
