MEET YOUR HOST:
Rachel & family sold everything in 2014 and never have looked back. We've been completely nomadic since 2018, homeschooling our three children. Some of our favorite family travel destinations include Turkey, Romania, New Zealand, Spain, and London. Our two younger kids will join the Pop-Up and will be 14 and 17 years old.
We run the Worldschool Pop-Up Hub and love the people we get to meet from this venture. So far, we've personally hosted or co-hosted more than 20 events and have attended a handful more. Can't wait to invite you into our mobile communities.
LODGING & NEIGHBORHOODS & TRANSPORT:
Many of our activities will take place in the Medeu District of Almaty (roughly from the Park of 28 Panfilov Guardsmen to Central Park & the Almaty Zoo). The Arbat pedestrian area in the Almany District is a close second for a centralized location. Past visitors also report they enjoyed staying near the Opera House and the host family will be staying in that area.
There are no outright dangerous areas of town, however it's good to note the area around the Green Bazaar can be dusty & noisy, and areas to the west and north of central Almaty become a bit shabbier (south of city center becomes more luxurious).
Almaty is Central Asia's 2nd-largest and most modern city, and as in any big city, exercise caution for pickpockets and keep your valuables secure. Central Almaty is quite walkable with pedestrian streets and green spaces. Metros, busses, and ride apps such as Uber and Yandex are available as well. If using the street taxis, negotiate the fair ahead of time.
